PNA Maryland’s Commitment to Community Services

Medical Mission coordinated by: C. Sarmiento, D. Krenzischek, M. Brigoli,  J.Brigoli,  &  E. Gutierrez

On February 6th , 2020, PNAMC and forty-eight enthusiastic  volunteers from the USA  converged to Vigan, Ilocos Sur for a Medical Mission briefing from the main sponsor, Caritas of Nueva Segovia.  This was followed by a welcome visit to the Capitol to meet the Governor’s staff. A Balikturo was conducted by some PNAMC members at the University of Northern Philippines. Lectures to the nursing students covered Hypertension, Heart Failure, Evidence-based Practice, and LGBT. There was a quick tour of Vigan, the capital city famous for reliving the Spanish settlement and tradition. As the excitement rose, on 2/8 - 2/9, the group headed to the MM sites through winding and at times treacherous roads to the mountainous Barangays of Del Pilar and Sigay, Ilocos Sur. Immersing into the culture of the indigenous people, the volunteers delivered medical, dental, minor surgical , and optical services to the community with the help of the Caritas support staff of doctors, nurses, pharmacists, healthcare workers, and beloved parish priests. Large supplies of medicines were readily available while the children from K to Grade 6 were treated with school supplies and goody bags. The kids were very delighted of the treats.  Patients with critical hypertension received a comprehensive teaching and laminated pamphlets in Ilocano. In summary, they had a total of 765 people cared for: 532 medical, 106 dental, 75 optical, and 52 surgical of lumps/bumps and circumcisions. The MM culminated with a visit to Bahay  Taripato, a house for the elderly who did not have any known living relative. This is similar to the American assisted- living facilities. The residents were given “dusters” (loose lounging clothes) and slippers and some monetary gift for the caregivers in appreciation of their hard work and voluntary services.  Then, came a well deserved R&R in Pugos Beach of Cabugao and a short exciting road trip to Pagudpud, Paoay, and Laoag City. Indeed, this Medical Mission was very humbling, satisfying, inspiring, and uplifting!

THANK YOU TO ALL THE VOLUNTEERS, DONORS, THE GOVERNOR OF ILOCOS SUR, CARITAS OF NUEVA SEGOVIA, A WARM  HOSPITALITY OF THE BARANGAYS, THE AZCUETA  FAMILY AND ANICOCHE  FAMILY!
